Reflecting on 2025

1.What were the highlights or accomplishments of the past year?

 I’d have to say, the highlight was our trip to Alberta at the end of August. It’s been many years since we’ve been out to visit our son and his family, so it was long overdue! Another highlight in early August was our Blair sibling reunion, with just one brother not in attendance. We know that this is very likely the last time we’ll all be together on this earth.
Our biggest accomplishment was creating a beautiful yard here at the little red roof cottage. Another accomplishment has been our dietary changes. Brian has lost 55 lbs and I’ve lost 28. But weight loss wasn’t the main goal, health improvement was. We are both feeling much better and even though I had an episode while hiking in the mountains, I know there’s no way I could have even made it a little way up that trail last year!
We also started attending the Evangelical Free Church, here in Carberry. We’re right back where we started and it feels like home, seeing so many familiar faces from years ago.

 2. What were the major themes of the past year?

Similar to last year, and every year, the main theme was working on projects. The previous year we were working on our new home, but this year we worked on the yard. We turned an empty lot into a beautiful landscaped fenced yard with lots of places to sit and have coffee.

 3. What disappointments or regrets did you experience?

 No regrets, but a lot of sadness. My oldest brother has been on palliative care at home for some time now. We’re so thankful for the visits we’ve been able to have and we’re praying for a lot more time. In November, brother #4 went into hospital with extremely high blood sugar, pneumonia and probably a heart attack, and had a triple bypass on Christmas Eve. December 17 we heard that brother #2 had been rushed to HSC with a major brain bleed. At the time of this writing, he is out of the coma and off the ventilator and showing improvement. The same day we heard brother #3 is having surgery in January for bladder cancer. We’re praying daily for each of my brothers. We’re also praying for our kids, as some are going through some difficult times.

 4. What was missing from the past year?

 It’s been a busy year as always, but I don’t feel like anything was missing. We’ve enjoyed working on various projects, and we’re looking forward to the coming year.

 5. What did you learn from the past year?

 I learned that life is very short and we never know when a loved one may be taken from us and we should make the most of the time we have together

My Verse For 2026 Hebrews 4:16

   Many years ago, our son and daughter in law gave me a book for Christmas, Memories For my Grandchild. I was supposed to fill in the pages, but never did, because I wanted to make my own book and add pictures. I thought that way I could make copies for all of my kids and grandkids. Well, many years have passed and I finally decided to start on this project. But not just me; Brian is writing his memories too.

   I found a program that would format our book for printing and got started. But first, I needed a title. I’m not sure how I came to it, but I decided to use the name of a song I wrote. It’s the only song Brian and I ever sang together, and it’s about the journey we take through life, with Calvary being the true starting point. The song is called By Mercy and Grace, and I really think it sums up the life we’ve lived and hopefully continue to live for some time yet…It’s only by His mercy and grace!

   Towards the end of the year, two of my brothers went into the hospital, another is already on palliative care and a fourth is scheduled for cancer surgery in the new year. We have been praying constantly for not only them, but so many of our family for various needs.

  When I started to think about what my verse for the year should be, I came to a very familiar verse,

 Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

   Right before Christmas, our pastor quoted this portion of scripture for the benediction, and confirmed that this was my verse for the coming year. We are truly in need of God’s mercy and grace!

Verses 14-15 state, Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

   May we walk through 2026 coming boldly before the throne of grace, knowing we have a Lord and Saviour who cares and is there, waiting for us to call on Him in our times of need!

My word for 2026 is Bold.

My Verse For 2025 Matthew 5:16

Make Him Known

don’t remember the what scripture the message was based on, or even when it was preached, but a few months ago, at church, I was impressed to write down three words. I didn’t have a notebook handy, so I used a scrap of paper. The three words were: Make Him Known.

Ever since we started our YouTube channel, we’ve been wanting to find ways to incorporate our faith in our videos. These three words seemed to confirm that desire. My prayer for this coming year is that we can more consistently share our faith with our viewers, and make Christ known.

Matthew 5:16

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Reflecting on 2024

Looking back over the past year.

1. What were the highlights or accomplishments of the past year?

The first highlight was our granddaughter’s wedding in January.

The next highlight was Brian/OJ retired in May! We also moved into our little fixer upper, now our cozy retirement house, in May.

I guess the other main highlight has been continuing to post YouTube videos. We were monetized late in 2023, and we’re now earning coffee money from our videos! 😁

2. What were the major themes of the past year?

Well that’s easy! Work! What’s new, right?! We spent the majority of 2024 renovating the little fixer upper we bought in November of 2023. And again, consistently putting out YouTube videos all year! This year we documented all of our renovations.

3. What disappointments or regrets did you experience?

I can’t think of any disappointments or regrets! We’re enjoying being back home in our little house, and it’s great to have my husband home all the time!

4. What was missing from the past year?

I guess the one thing missing was free time. It’s been a very busy year, but as we come to the end of the year, things are slowing down, and we’re looking forward to the coming year.

5. What did you learn from the past year?

I learned that even in our mid sixties, we’re capable of doing a huge renovation project. I’ve also confirmed that this is the last time we do this! It’s time to slow down, relax, and enjoy retired life. Hopefully, Brian learned the same thing! 😃

Downsizing To a Little Fixer Upper For Retirement

Retirement is just around the corner!

As we thought about OJ’s upcoming retirement, we decided we wanted to spend this next stage of life in our home town. We have never strayed too far, but we have moved several times, and we felt it was time to go back home. It didn’t take long for OJ to find a little house he liked. I was not so easily convinced, given that this house required a lot of work before we could move in. But, in spite of being over 65 years old, I knew we could turn this little fixer upper into a cute little cottage.

Join us over on YouTube and follow our progress as we renovate this little house!

We purchase this little house in November of 2023, and started documenting our progress, with the plan to hopefully have all the renovations inside far enough along that we could move in sometime in the spring.

My Verse For 2024 ~ Lamentations 3:22-23

My verse for 2023 was Micah 6:8

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

I wrote this…

As we step into this new year, I acknowledge my total dependence on my Lord and Saviour.  I just want to walk humbly with Him, seeking his guidance day by day as I move forward, embracing change in whatever He has for me.

When I chose this verse last year, I had no idea what changes I would be embracing. Having turned 65 this year, I knew retirement was coming closer for Brian, but late in the summer he started talking about where he wanted to retire. We had originally thought we would retire right where we are now, but things have changed over the years, and we really don’t have anything keeping us here. So, Brian decided we should move back to our home town. I was thinking in a years time, but once he got that idea in his head, he wanted to start looking to see what might be available for housing. And then he found a little house. The first time we looked, just from the outside, I said, “No way, it’s too much work.” At first he seemed to agree, but he kept coming back to it, until I finally agreed to have a look inside. Of course it wasn’t long before we were making an offer, and within a little over a month we were the owners of this ‘little gem’.

I’m not sure what the coming year has in store for us, aside from a lot of work on our little fixer upper, but Brian will be retiring in the spring time, God willing! This will be a new chapter for us, and I’m looking forward to it.

As I was reading and thinking about this year’s verse, this scripture came up a couple of times. It’s one of my favourites.

It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23

I step into this new year thankful for my Saviour and God, for his compassion and his faithfulness. No matter how crazy this world around us is, and no matter how many times we fail Him, God is in control and will never fail us. His mercies are new every day.

My word for the year is NEW.

Several years ago I wrote a song :

New Every Day

Oh.. gracious is our Lord...., and blessed be his name.
Holy in all his works...., and righteous in all his ways.
 Great is our.. Lord, and greatly to be praised.
His compassions never fail. They're new every day.
 New every day. (new every day) New every day.
New mercies every morning, fall like dew by God's grace.
 New every day. (new every day) New every day.
 God's compassions, his.... mercies are new every day.
 God upholds me when I fall..... lifts me up when I'm bowed down,
 opens up his.. hand.....there satisfaction is found.
 Faithful is our Lord..... extending his great grace.
His compassions never fail, they're new every day.
 New every day. (new every day) New every day.
New mercies every morning, fall like dew by God's grace.
New every day. (new every day) New every day.
God's compassions, his mercies are new every day.
New every day (new every day)New every day
God’s compassions, his mercies, are new every day

Reflecting On 2023

Looking back over the past year.

1. What were the highlights or accomplishments of the past year?

The biggest highlight of the past year was Emberley having her final chemo! Another highlight was the birth of another grandson. Justin and Ruth welcomed a baby boy in August. Then in September, Jeremy and Ashley had a beautiful outdoor wedding.

In November we bought a little fixer upper! Brian will be retiring in the spring, and decided we should move back to our home town. The beginning of a new adventure!

2. What were the major themes of the past year?

I don’t know that there was any particular theme the past year, other than consistently putting out YouTube videos all year!

But come fall the theme was decluttering and downsizing, in preparation for a move to our little house in Carberry in spring of 2024. Then in November, the theme became renovations!

3. What disappointments or regrets did you experience?

I can’t think of any disappointments or regrets! I’m excited about moving ‘home’! It’s a lot of work to get the house ready, but it’s what we do, and we enjoy working together.

4. What was missing from the past year?

I can’t say that anything was missing from this past year. Emberley coming to the end of her chemo made anything else very unimportant. I’m just so thankful that she is through that stage and pray that she’ll continue to gain back her strength and her immune system.

5. What did you learn from the past year?

That my husband is crazy! I’m pretty sure he’s finding that out  for himself, having taken on this renovation project! But I I’m crazy too, so we make a good pair. 😃

Oral Lichen Planus and Life Update

Time for an update!

Aside from making my yearly review and scripture posts, I haven't been on this blog much for the past couple of years, so I decided I better get in here and let you know I'm still out here!

Lichen Planus

Even though my last update was almost two years ago, I still have many visits here every month looking for information on Lichen Planus. My posts, My Oral Lichen Planus Diet, Living With Oral Lichen Planus, and my Oral Lichen Planus Resource lists are some of my most popular posts. I hope these posts have been helpful to all who are seeking information about this terrible illness. I belong to a few groups online and hear so many stories of suffering far worse than I've experienced, so I do hope I've been a help.

How have I been the past two years?

I really wish I had taken the time to keep a record of how my OLP symptoms have been. I do know that at Christmas 2021, I decided to try an orange, something I hadn't risked eating in a few years. I was surprised to find that it didn't cause a flare up. Over the next months, I started adding other foods that had previously been on my list of foods to avoid, number one on the list being tomatoes. For several months I enjoyed eating a lot of foods I probably shouldn't have, and I still do. I've even been able to eat pizza! But eventually, I ended up with a flare up and that scalded feeling, although it never went away completely, it did intensify again. So, I had to go back to being more careful. I have to say, I did enjoy it while it lasted!
At this point, in January 2023, I'm feeling pretty good. Yes, I can feel the OLP, but it isn't in a flare, so it's manageable. I'm still able to eat tomatoes, citrus fruits, and a bit of spice in moderation. The one thing I've realized I need to avoid more than anything else is SUGAR. I know, I know, that should be a given, but sometimes I just want a bit of chocolate! Well, I need to find some other food to treat myself, because I'm guaranteed a flare up if I eat sweet things.

What do I attribute my progress to?

Supplements! I really do believe the supplements I've been taking for years now are the reason not only my OLP is milder, but I just feel good, for the most part. I have more energy in my 60s than I ever did 20 years ago!

Supplement List:

 I take 8 supplements, some of which are blends or combinations of vitamins etc. The ingredient list is long on some of them, so I won't include the amounts of the ingredients in each one.

Multivitamin & Mineral: Beta caroten, Vitamins C,D,E,B6,B12, Thiamine,Riboflavin, Niacinamide, Folate, Biotin, Pantothenic acid, Calcium, Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Molybdenum, Boron,

High EPA Fish Oil

Broad Spectrum Antioxidant: Mixed carotenoids, Vitamin C, Mixed tocopherols concentrate, Lycopene, Olive extract, Grape extract, Calcium (carbonate)

Inflammatory Support: Turmeric, Ginger, Green Tea, Devil's Claw, Calcium

Anthocyanin Rich Antioxidant: Grape seed, Resveratrol, Green Tea, Protease, Bromelain, Quercetin, Bilberry Extract, Ginko Extract

Probiotic

Extra Vitamin D3

Immune Function Support: vitamin C, E, zinc, Echinacea extract, Astragalus, Black Chokeberry extract

I can't say for sure why these supplements have helped me, but I do know the last three on the list seem to have made the most difference. I added these to my regimen a few years ago, and that's when I started to see improvements. These are also the supplements recommended to strengthen the immune system against a virus and I had a very mild case. Coincidence? Perhaps. But I do seem to be sick a lot less frequently than I used to be, so I'll take the win!

What am I doing these days instead of blogging?

As much as I've always loved writing, I just can't seem to get back into it. Even in the last two years I was blogging, I'd start off the first of the year with plans and ideas, but had a hard time following through. Our granddaughter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in March 2020, at the age of 6. At that time, I started a Facebook page called Team Emberley, and I guess that took more of my focus. It was a way to update family and friends on her progress through the ups and downs of treatment. It also became a way to raise funds to help support our son and his family. With all the trips to the city, and long stays in the hospital or Ronald MacDonald House it was impossible for him to work full time. Two months later, his second daughter was born, making things even more difficult.
We're looking forward to our granddaughter ringing the bell after her last chemo in June, 2023, God willing.
We've been overwhelmed with the support and encouragement we've received during this time, but we didn't want to depend on the generosity of others indefinitely, so we started brainstorming other ways to raise funds. My husband came up with a novel idea; start a YouTube channel! In March 2022, he uploaded his first video on  Coffee Walks and Whatever.
I'm mostly behind the scenes, but as time goes by, I've started taking part more in the videos. It's a long road to monetization for two old fogies like us, but it's something we can do together, and guess what? We're having fun!

I hope you'll come over and check out the channel, and you can also follow our FB page.

Will I be back to blogging?

I never say never! When I see how many people still visit here, it really does make me want to come back. And who knows, that need to write may return someday and I'll make my way back here on a regular basis. For now, I'll try to at least make an update now and then. I may even share some videos from Coffee Walks and Whatever. 😁

To whoever is reading this, Thank you so much for stopping by my little corner of the blogosphere. I hope you've found a little help and encouragement during your visit.
Until next time, Bye for now ~~~Deb

Verse for 2023 ~~~~ Micah 6:8

Last year I wrote:

As I thought about these things, I came across this verse that seems to best portray what I want my focus to be in the coming year:

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3

As well intentioned as I was at the beginning of the year, I have to confess, there have been many days that perfect peace has eluded me. I haven’t stopped trusting, but I know I’ve allowed my mind to wander…to go to places that bring anything but perfect peace. I have not kept my mind on the Lord in the way this verse instructs.

This year, as I thought about what I want my focus to be, I was thinking something about moving forward, embracing change, new things, or the future. But as I was reading, I came across Micah 6:8 and knew that was my verse.

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8

As we step into this new year, I acknowledge my total dependence on my Lord and Saviour.  I just want to walk humbly with Him, seeking his guidance day by day as I move forward, embracing change in whatever He has for me.

Reflecting On 2022

1. What were the highlights or accomplishments of the past year?

The highlight of the past year was the Brian starting a YouTube channel in March. It came about when we were brain storming ways to raise funds to help out Justin during Emberley’s illness. We were watching a young guy walking around his city making videos and Brian thought, “I could do that!’ and so he did! It can be difficult coming up with a video at least once a week, but for the most part, it’s been fun and we’re looking forward to new adventures in the coming years.

I don’t know if I’d call it a highlight, but seeing Emberley out of the hospital more this past year has definitely been a blessing!

Attending church starting in spring when the mask mandates were lifted has been a highlight. Different from what we’re used to but we’re settling in and enjoying being there.

2. What were the major themes of the past year?

Emberley’s continued treatment for Leukemia has been the main theme.

The other constant has been the YouTube channel; coming up with places to go for a walk and trying out different ideas has been fun and challenging and definitely getting us out and about!

3. What disappointments or regrets did you experience?

I can’t really think of anything I would consider a disappointment or a regret. Of course we would love to see Emberley completely healthy and not undergoing treatment, but we’re looking forward to her ringing that chemo bell after her last treatment, hopefully in June.

4. What was missing from the past year?

I read my answer from last year and decided, it works for this year too… I guess I’m missing just having a normal life, one where I don’t have a granddaughter with cancer.

5. What did you learn from the past year?

I guess the main thing would be that we’re never to old to try something new or make a huge life change.

If we spend too much time focused on the negative things in this world or in our personal lives, it just gets us down. It’s so much better to have a positive outlook and make changes that will improve our lives. Some of those changes are just getting out of our comfort zone and getting in front of a camera. Others are more significant, like letting go of some things from the past, deciding to go visit a church and finding that maybe it’s the right place for us.

Verse For 2022~~~ Isaiah 26:3

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3

 I’m not sure how or when it came to me, but somewhere in the past couple of weeks I knew that my word for the year would be ‘Trust’.  What else could it be? This past year has definitely been a reminder to me that the only way to get through each day is to trust in God. This world and our lives are in his hands, so what else can we do but to trust that he has a plan in everything we go through?

As I contemplated what I should write today, I was reminded of something I learned shortly after I came to know Jesus as my Saviour back in 1985. We’d begun home schooling out kids and in one of Dana’s Bible study books the lesson was on the account of Joseph’s life in Genesis. I think I may have gotten more out of that lesson than Dana did! It made such an impression on me as a baby Christian that years later I included it in my book.

Who would have thought that God had a part in Joseph’s brothers selling him into slavery? I’m sure when he was going through it all, even Joseph didn’t understand why all these things were happening to him, but he remained faithful to God nonetheless. It took many years before God’s plan became evident, but in Genesis 45:8a Joseph tells his brothers, “so, now it was not you that sent me hither, but God:” God had a plan for Joseph’s life, even though it meant he would have to endure pain and suffering. It’s so comforting to know that no matter how confusing, or how difficult the circumstances of my life may be, God is in control.

I also read a quote from Charles Spurgeon’s message, A Happy Christian.

“And you, friend, when you are in good full work, and wages are high, and the house is well-furnished, and the cupboard is full, it is very easy then for you to kneel down at family-prayer and thank God for his kindness; but how about it when the husband is sick, when the funds have got very low, and when the little children look at their father wondering where the next meal will come from — to be satisfied even then that it is all right! Oh this is a grand thing! This is just the mark of difference between the Christian and the worldling. The worldling blesses God while he gives him plenty, but the Christian blesses him when he smites him: he believes him to be too wise to err and too good to be unkind; he trusts him where he cannot trace him, looks up to him in the darkest hour, and believes that all is well. O Christian, if your heart is right, you will understand this spiritual satisfaction, and your soul will be satisfied in times of drought.”

As I thought about these things, I came across this verse that seems to best portray what I want my focus to be in the coming year:

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3

There’s also a song based on Spurgeon’s words. It’s been a favourite for years, so I thought I’d include it.

Reflecting On 2021

Continuing my yearly tradition of looking back over the past year.

 1. What were the highlights or accomplishments of the past year?

The highlight of the year was the birth of our granddaughter, Emilia. Another highlight was Jeremy moving back to Manitoba and starting work at a gold mine in Snow Lake.

Reconnecting with old friends through our fundraisers was a highlight…as well as meeting new people. Aside form those there weren’t a lot of highlights this year!

2. What were the major themes of the past year?

Illness seemed to be the theme of the year…covid in January, then Emberley’s leukemia diagnosis in March and continuing treatment, illnesses and hospitalization have taken up the year.

3. What disappointments or regrets did you experience?

No personal regrets, but the whole year has been disappointing….disappointing circumstances, disappointing relationships.

4. What was missing from the past year?

That’s a hard question. I guess I’m missing just having a normal life, one where I don’t have a granddaughter with cancer.

5. What did you learn from the past year?

You learn a lot when you have a crisis in your life. Most important is that with God we can get through anything. Second..life can change in a moment, we have no guarantee of tomorrow, so don’t take anything for granted. Third, you learn a lot about who you can count on and unfortunately, who you can’t. Covid had already revealed the true nature and character of many. But when our granddaughter was diagnosed with Leukemia some of the people I thought would be there to support us, encourage us and just be there to talk….or listen, were nowhere to be found. But at the same time, people I never would have thought of stepped up and stood in that gap…some were old friends, some just acquaintances and many were complete strangers. Until you go through something like this you don’t realize just how much a kind word can help. A phone call, a text message, a face book comment or even just a virtual hug and praying hands mean so much.

I hope I’ve learned to be that kind of person for others as well. I’ve never been good at knowing what to say to someone going through a rough time, but I’ve realized it doesn’t really matter what you say. It’s just taking the time to show that you care that makes all the difference. Years ago I wrote a song that speaks of this very thing.

Words Fitly Spoken

When you see someone that's hurting, do you say,

“Friend, come let’s pray,”
and do you share their burden, and brighten up their day?
Do you give them some comfort, as the word of God you share,
or do you ease their heartache, by showing that you care?

When we heed the Spirit’s prodding
to share God’s love and grace,
we’ll never have regrets for the choices we have made.
And we may never know what a few words fitly spoken,
may do to lift the load of one who’s heart is broken.

When a loved one who’s estranged seems to be
weighing on your heart,
don’t let the moment pass by; just call or send that card.
You’ll quickly mend some fences
when you take that step of faith,
for there’s no wound or chasm too deep for God’s great grace.

When we heed the Spirit’s prodding
to share God’s love and grace,
we’ll never have regrets for the choices we have made.
And we may never know what a few words fitly spoken,
may do to lift the load of one who’s heart is broken.

When a long forgotten friend suddenly comes into your mind,
don’t push that thought aside; don’t say I’ll waste my time.
A friendly hand extended may just help someone in need,
so kindle an old friendship, and allow the Lord to lead.

When we heed the Spirit’s prodding
to share God’s love and grace,
we’ll never have regrets for the choices we have made.
And we may never know what a few words fitly spoken,
may do to lift the load of one who’s heart is broken.
We can make a difference with a few words fitly spoken.
~~~
Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Philippians 2:1,2 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
Proverbs 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
A new year is about to begin and although I’m praying it will be better than this year has been, I know that whatever comes, God is in control and He’s already there waiting to walk us through whatever lies ahead.
Rejoicing In God’s Miracles
Lord give me the eyes of a child;
To see your hand in every gift and trial,
To marvel at your works, to wonder at your grace,
To stand in awe and glorify your name.
I just saw one of God’s miracles
I wrote the song God's Miracles many years ago.
The words above are from that song, inspired by a post written by a friend.
This is an excerpt from her post:
We were driving to church when our son yelled out excitedly from the back seat, "Momma, I just saw one of God's miracles!" I can't even remember exactly what he saw. Regardless, I just haven't been able to shake that statement.
Everyday, God does wonderful, amazing things all around us and we just keep on going like it was nothing. Young children see things differently. I suppose that's one of the reasons we've been admonished to have faith like a child. Our son often marvels over things that seem so everyday to me. I was reading in the Psalms to the kids a few nights ago when he just couldn't get over the fact that God, the Almighty God, wants to be his God too. I remember last Easter when he found a little purple flower growing in the middle of a huge field. He wondered that the Creator of the Universe put that little flower right there for him to enjoy. This morning, he said he was  so thankful that God helped him to sleep all night long. Every day brings some new revelation to strengthen his faith in the I AM.
Everyday God puts miracles -- not chance circumstances, not coincidences -- but MIRACLES in our lives. How often do we recognize them? Big things like miraculous healings, well, those are the ones we can't wait until testimony time to share. For some reason, we often convince ourselves that "big" miracles are a sign of God's approval on our lives. Yet, we diminish the importance of what we consider "little blessings" as inconsequential. Even when we do value them, we are embarrassed to share them because it seems childish to think of such things as miracles. Consider this -- ALL of God's miracles are for the simple reason of bringing glory to GOD. Don't be afraid to share them.
Let me ask you this, "What is a miracle?" This may seem over simplified, but -- miracles are something only God can do. It took no more of God's power to heal my dad than it did to put a little blue flower in a field in just the right spot for a little boy to learn that God cares about him. It takes the same power to save a sinful soul from Hell that it does to keep you breathing.
"Momma, I just saw one of God's miracles!" Have you seen a miracle lately?
Lord give me the eyes of a child...
As adults our lives can become so cluttered with our every day duties and commitments that we can become oblivious to God working and we often don’t recognize those little miracles. Sure we notice the big things; someone getting saved, a health issue resolved, big news from a mission field…but a flower in the middle of the field? And yet, it’s those little things we need to be paying attention to. Those are the things a life of faith are made up of, the things that show that our God is concerned about even the smallest details of our lives. I remember as a new Christian having an experience during a baseball game of all things that made me marvel at the fact that God was truly interested in every aspect of my life. I still had the eyes of a child!
To see your hand in every gift and trial...
Perhaps we do recognize God's hand in something as simple as a little blue flower in the middle of a field...but what about the weeds in our garden? Do we see God in the difficulties of life? I was listening to a devotion the other day about looking for lessons in the valley, asking God, "What do you want me to learn from this trial?" When we look at difficult situations from this perspective we start to see God's hand even in the hard times.
I recently went through such a time. I was terribly hurt by someone close to me and it was hard to see past the disappointment, but when I heard that message, God opened my heart to see that he was wanting to show me some things. Yes, I still felt the sting but I was able to take my focus off myself and learn from the situation.
To marvel at your works…
On Sunday I heard a message preached about how when things become common we tend to take them for granted. He used the Israelites as an example. They probably marvelled the first few weeks of God providing manna, but what about after a month, a year, 20 years? It was definitely a miracle but eventually it became common place and they just took for granted it would be there. I wonder how many even gave much thought to who was providing it. But aren’t we the same? We may even acknowledge these blessings and miracles are from God but we no longer marvel at his works.
To wonder at your grace…
Do I really wonder at God's grace or do I just take it for granted? I'm ashamed to admit how many times I've strayed and yet God is always there offering grace and forgiveness. No matter how many times I lose my way, he’s always there when I finally get my focus back on him. His long suffering toward me is truly a wonder!
To stand in awe and glorify your name…
Yes, give me the eyes of a child, Lord! Let me see your hand in every gift and trial. As I write this I’ve been marvelling at how God has used the preaching of his word as well as this song, chosen many months ago, for just the time I would need it to help me through a difficult time. Lord, I just saw one of your miracles! I stand in awe and glorify your name!
Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31
Momma, I just saw one of God's miracles!
And I know he did it just for me.
He planted that blue flower in the middle of the field,
Just to tell me how much he cares for me.
~
Lord give me the eyes of a child;
To see your hand in every gift and trial,
To marvel at your works, to wonder at your grace,
To stand in awe and glorify your name.
~
Every day we experience God's miracles,
but we're quick to simply brush them aside.
We count them little blessings, and we say a prayer of thanks,
as we go on about our busy lives.
~
Lord give me the eyes of a child;
To see your hand in every gift and trial,
To marvel at your works, to wonder at your grace,
To stand in awe and glorify your name.
~
Everyone wants to tell of God's miracles;
of great healings, and of reaching lost souls.
But greater is the message of a simple childlike faith,
crying, "I just saw one of our God's miracles!"
~
Lord give me the eyes of a child;
To see your hand in every gift and trial,
To marvel at your works, to wonder at your grace,
To stand in awe and glorify your name.
~
Lord, I just saw one of your miracles!
I stand in awe and glorify your name!
